I’ve fallen in love with a virtual keyboard, it’s called swype. I never thought input on a virtual keyboard could be so fluid and accurate, this App will change the way we use touch screen devices.
The premise is simple enough and implemented to perfection. You simply swype over the word you want to input without you finger/thumb leaving the screen. I was sceptical at first, thinking it would be really inaccurate, but I was amazed. It’s so fluid and accurate, far more accurate than any virtual keyboard I’ve ever used. The speed I can now type is amazing, I’d be quite happy writing out a lengthy email with this keyboard, something I’ve always waited to be at a full keyboard to do previously.
Enough from me why don’t you go try it out, if you have an android, it’s now in open beta here.
BTW this was written with swype on the bus.

I’m going to start writing a few little pieces about my time with Android, the Google mobile phone operating system, I’ll begin with a brief history of my early experience. I got my first phone not long after the release of version 1.5, it was the HTC G1/Dream, the ‘Google Phone’, I got it just after my iPhone was stolen and I have to say it was a breath of fresh air. It was a sideways slider phone with full qwetry keyboard and a touch screen. This was where my experience started, the OS at that time was basic to say the least, but that didn’t matter because of the community of Devs working to enhance the device, that is the great thing about an open operating system. Since I had come from such a locked down phone (even though I’d jailbroken my iPhone), it really was great to be able to do what I wanted with My device!

The first thing I did was root my phone, it was easy with the g1 was it was google device and designed to me modified. Back then it was devs like JesusFreke and Haykuro that were really big on the scene, who have since moved away. Once the phone was rooted it opened up a whole world of custom ROMs, themes, software and different way to backup and restore the phone.

After rooting the phone I then proceeded to flash a custom recovery image to enable me to flash custom ROM’s and themes, back then it was very basic, but now the choice is so vast, it would be hard for someone new to the scene to know where to start. The first ROM I flashed was a JesusFreke ROM, I can’t remember the version but it was based on Android 1.51 Cupcake (they name all versions after deserts), it was fast and had loads of usefull tweaks and since then I don’t think I’ve stayed with the same version of a ROM fro more than a week since. The development moves so fast with bug fixes and extra features, it just kept me coming back for more.

I learned everything I know about hacking my phone from XDA, a great site that’s been dedicated to developing and hacking HTC devices for years. Starting with the original O2 XDA when it was released, hence their name. I would says it’s essential to become a member of this forum if you are thinking of starting to hack you Android device, hook up with me there, I go by the tag IIIIkoolaidIII (as normal).

I loved that phone and still have it, but have since moved on to the HCT Desire, a much sleaker phone, with no keyboard and full touch screen. I do miss the keyboard, but at it this time there is nothing with the same power with a full qwerty keyboard.

I will be hopefully be posting allot more over the coming weeks and place to keep this blog up to date. But knowing me I will forget! Hope you enjoy my thoughts.
